Temperature of the Black Sea

The Black Sea is a charming body of water situated in the temperate zone. The sea is suitable for tourism, especially during the summer season. The Black Sea borders seven countries: Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Abkhazia. The sea has provided food for countless generations and most of today’s coastal cities have started out as ancient settlements. This sea is free of cataclysms such as typhoons and tsunamis. Since it is relatively small, the Black Sea is quite mild throughout the year: it almost never freezes, with just a few such occurrences being documented throughout the years.

Black Sea Temperature in the Winter

The Black Sea is the reason the winter season is so mild in the coastal cities. Starting in November, the sea gradually starts cooling off after the long summer. This makes December a great month for a winter visit! You should not worry about the winds being too chilly and the snowfall being too heavy. Moreover, the average temperature of the water is 11.4 °C, and the Black Sea acts as a guardian against the impending winter. Just remember that black ice is a common occurrence in the cities on the Black Sea coast, so make sure that you drive with care.

Black Sea Temperature in the Spring

After the cold months, the Black Sea starts getting warmer and warmer. However, the water is still quite cold. March is usually a continuation of the winter season. By May the temperature of the seawater has almost doubled from the winter lows. Local people usually start the beach season when the water hits the 17°C mark. The spring season has perfect weather for hiking and simply walking along the coast: it is warm, but not hot.

Black Sea Temperature in the Summer

This is when the Black Sea shines. The water gets to its highest yearly temperatures in July and August. If you are looking for a nice trip to the beach, this is the perfect time to go. The golden sands, the clear water, the summer breeze – Black Sea offers almost anything a tourist would need. Just remember to bring any beach accessories you might need – beach towel, sunscreen, hat, lounge chair, sunglasses, surf/wake boards, water jet pack etc., and enjoy an unforgettable vacation!

Black Sea Temperature in the Autumn

After the summer hype is gone, the seaside becomes much less visited. What people do not realize is that the seawater temperature is still quite high at around 21.3°C! Yes, the weather starts getting chilly, but you can still go for a quick swim, but then just quickly dry yourself. Swimming aside, autumn is another great season for long walks and hikes. November is the prelude to the winter months, you can already feel it in the rapid fall of the sea water temperature. At 15°C, the Black Sea is no longer pleasant for quick dips.

The Black Sea is truly amazing, both because of the weather conditions and the coastal cities. It is a cheaper alternative to the expensive resorts we all keep hearing about. However, if you give it a chance, you might find it becoming one of your favourite seaside destinations
