Varna is the largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It’s not a resort-type town, but it’s very open and welcoming to tourists. Visitors can expect a wide range of activities, rich culture and vibrant nightlife.
The maritime climate ensures warm summers and mild winters. Varna is also abundant in spa centers which offer mineral pools and mud treatments. These relaxing procedures have also some healing properties. Varna’s average temperatures of 21°C - 25°C are guaranteed for at least few months a year. The calm sea breeze will keep air fresh, even during the hottest part of the day.
Plenty of sunshine and warm sea temperature make Varna a prime summer destination for locals and tourists alike. It’s hard to make concrete predictions, but the last few years have been hotter than the previous ones. The beach season starts in May and continues until first weeks of October. Fine sand, calming sea and sunshine will become a part of your normal day. From May through August you can enjoy 11-12 hours of sunshine a day. The air is mostly humid, but there isn’t much rain. Temperatures can reach up to 31°C - 32°C during last weeks of July and the whole August. However, the cooling breeze from the sea will help you feel refreshed.

The average daily temperatures are around 13°C-15°C during these seasons. You can visit the cathedral, take a long walk in the Sea Garden or simply visit a pub and enjoy your favorite drink. While the northern parts of Europe are chilly in spring and autumn, Varna’s weather is pleasantly mild.
Winters in Varna can get quite chilly, mainly because of the constant sea winds. The city is protected from the northern gusts by the nearby hills. However, the winter season is still relatively mild here compared to central Bulgaria, thanks to the Black Sea presence. Snowfalls are rare, but when they do happen, you can expect icy conditions. Be aware of the black ice which is a common occurrence in Varna.
January and February are the coldest months, but December is still relatively warm. If you wish to visit Varna during the winter, be prepared for any conditions. However, don’t be shy about going out as there is still a lot to do. Local menus become cozier, ice rinks open up and there are more than enough activities to keep you busy.
The weather in Varna allows for a perfect summer vacation, pleasant spring and autumn and a mild winter. Temperatures will rarely go below the freezing point. If the weather seems too hot during the summer, don’t worry - the constant breeze will keep you fresh and ready for adventure.
